 January 2025 Funding Letter

In the early 1970's Reverend Bill Heimach, then pastor of Auburn Presbyterian Church, realized there was a need for DeKalb County's seniors to come together for food, fellowship, and fun. In 1978, that vision led to the development of the DeKalb County Council on Aging. That same year, the agency's first executive director, Sandy Mafera, helped to facilitate the purchase, at auction for $30,000, of an old Baptist church at the corner of 6th and Jackson Streets. Sandy went home that evening and her husband, Steve, asked, "What did you do today?" Sandy replied, "Bought a church!" Gasping, Steve asked, "With what?" A smiling, giddy Sandy stated, "Who knows, but it will work out — it is going to be the county's first senior center!" With the help of scores of volunteers, Reverend Bill Heimach, other community leaders, and dozens of funders, Sandy's dream became a reality.

YOUR SUPPORT assists seniors, disabled persons, and others in maintaining their independence as long as possible. It allows us to extend programs and services that meet the physical, mental, emotional, intellectual, and mobility needs of seniors, disabled persons, and others such as: outreach and advocacy, support groups, social gatherings & entertainment, food assistance programs, physical and educational programs, and day trips.

We are reaching out to you on behalf of DCCOA, committed to making a meaningful difference in our community. Your GENEROUS SUPPORT to our Annual Fund is vital to our ongoing efforts. Each contribution fuels our mission and allows us to profoundly touch lives. We realize that all accomplishments would not be possible without the support of the DeKalb County Community, and we invite you to partner with us in this important work.

In 2024, alone, The Heimach Center was blessed with a total of 845 members visiting our center 11,326 times for events we provide at the center. Wow! These members range in age from 55 to over 85! Our Seniors are living their BEST SENIOR LIFE POSSIBLE!

  • Joe came to the center to rent our facility for a memorial dinner after losing his wife. He then took a tour and learned he could be part of a Bereavement Group, Play Pool in the mornings and make new friends, attend monthly luncheons and so much more!

  • Flo loves to Volunteer, get involved, be with her friends while playing Mah Jongg, and attend monthly luncheons.

  • Joel loves the freedom that DART Transportation provides him so he can attend important events.

  • Dottie, a longtime member, had an infectious laugh and loved attending The Heimach Center — she would say "Everyone needs to come to the Heimach Center!" She loved meeting her friends here, attending monthly luncheons, and playing cards.

  • Ken and Carol both lost their spouses and joined our Grief Support Group. They received healing, became friends, and eventually married. Carol is now an active volunteer, and Ken is our Board Vice President.

Thank you for considering being part of our mission. TOGETHER, we can create lasting change and pave the way for an even brighter future for all those we serve. Your donations can be dropped off at the center, mailed or you can pay online via our website at www.dccoa.net and clicking on the donate button. If you would like to visit our center or DART Transportation and see what your monetary assistance can provide, please do not hesitate to contact us.
